Meet Ray Garcia – Co-Owner and Lead Trainer at K10 Academy Dog Training

As a behavior-focused dog trainer in Portland and trusted partner to Oregon Dog Rescue, I’ve worked with countless dogs struggling with reactivity, fear, overexcitement, and shutdown. I started K10 Academy to bring that same level of personalized, compassionate support to the broader Portland community.

Qualifications and Expertise

I began my career as a certified dog trainer in a small, family-owned business, quickly realizing that one-size-fits-all methods weren’t enough. The limited approach left me searching for better answers—ways to truly help dogs and their people thrive. That search led me to develop a holistic, hands-on coaching style that keeps both owner and dog engaged every step of the way.

After completing multiple advanced courses and diving deep into canine psychology and behavior, I set a new standard for myself: to be the kind of trainer I’d trust with my own dog. That’s when K10 Academy Dog Training was born—and I haven’t looked back.

Today, I’m an American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen (AKC CGC) evaluator, currently training a service dog in Deep Pressure Therapy for my own family. This personal journey gives me an intimate understanding of the patience, precision, and dedication required for specialized training. I also volunteer with Oregon Dog Rescue, where I work with dogs who need extra support to get adoption-ready. Because I’m deeply committed to helping these dogs succeed in their forever homes, I offer a special discount to anyone who adopts from ODR.

For me, dog training is a lifelong pursuit. I’m constantly learning, refining, and applying the latest science-based techniques so I can deliver effective, modern training that helps dogs and their humans live their best lives together.

Training Philosophy and Approach

I believe in training methods that are ethical, compassionate, and tailored to each dog’s unique personality and needs. Every dog has the capacity to learn and form a deep bond with their family, and my role is to help foster that connection. My work with dogs facing behavioral challenges—such as leash reactivity, aggression, and separation anxiety—has shaped a balanced, hands-on approach. This style emphasizes clear communication, practical strategies, and a collaborative process that keeps training engaging and rewarding for both dog and owner.

One recent case involved a high-energy shepherd mix who had been returned to the shelter twice for leash aggression. Through consistent work, structured exposure, and owner coaching, the dog learned to walk calmly past other dogs in under eight weeks—transforming daily walks from a struggle into a joy.

What You Can Expect from Portland Dog Training

When you work with me, you can expect a training experience that is thorough, approachable, and designed around your specific goals. From our first session, I take the time to understand your dog’s personality, your priorities, and any challenges you’re facing.

Whether we’re addressing problem behaviors or working toward advanced skills, we’ll move forward together with trust, respect, and a shared commitment to success.

Her career began in customer service for a small, family-owned business, where she quickly realized that dog training services could offer much more than quick fixes. After earning her certification and co-founding K10 Academy with Ray, Alyda helped shape the company into a mission-driven organization that puts people and dogs before profit. She also partners closely with Oregon Dog Rescue, volunteering each week to prepare rescue dogs for adoption and to support families so that those adoptions last.

Alyda’s passion for dogs started early. Growing up, she learned the basics of dog handling from her father, carrying that knowledge and love of animals into adulthood. Before starting K10 Academy, she spent over 10 years in healthcare management—an experience that sharpened her skills in leadership, communication, and client care. Combining her professional expertise with her lifelong love of dogs, Alyda now dedicates her career to helping families build strong, lasting relationships with their pets through science-based, results-driven, and compassionate training.

When you train with Alyda, you’ll gain clear tools and confidence to understand your dog’s personality, navigate challenges with skill, and strengthen the bond you share.

Outside of work, Alyda enjoys spending time with her Husband, kids, and dogs, practicing martial arts, and exploring all that the Portland metro area has to offer. Her belief is simple:

“Every dog deserves the chance to thrive—and every family deserves the tools to make that possible.”
